Frequently Asked Questions

Nobody knows!  The flowers have there own will!

But firstly you need to book WELL IN ADVANCE (45 guesthouses inclusive of farms/camping grounds) and the whole world wants to stay in Nieuwoudtville in Aug/Sept/Oct. Do not make the mistake some people do by just arriving thinking it is a small town and you will get accommodation.  You may end up sleeping in your car....

My advice:

  1. Book well in advance.
  2. Historically I have found that the best flower viewing times is 20 August to 10 Sept.
  3. Book 2 -3 nights as you want to make the most of this amazing wonder
  4. Expect rainy days
  5. Leave the expensive German or Italian Sports Motor at home.  Bring your truck or vehicle that can travel on dirt roads and be able to drive a little bit into the veld.
  6. Leave your food at home/dont shop before hand -  part of the Namaqua experience is food, and we are excellent in providing both flowers and food
  7. Come with an open hart, mind and arms.  We will fill them all!

No!

I have your best experience in mind.

I will give you a route custom designed for just you on the morning of your exploration into Namaqualand to view everything that is possible to view.

Why?  Because I take factors like weather and temperature and sunshine, roads and flowers starting to bloom or not blooming in consideration and that is determined early morning everyday. No 2 days are the same.

No!  Only rooms with showers.

You have travelled so far to experience Namaqualand flower show or just staying over any of the other periods in the year.   What makes Namaqualand different and the flower show so special is the aridness almost desert conditions and then this magical flowers that blooms.  Water is worth a lot and we cant waste it.

That is why we recycle our grey water for sprinkling the garden.

We also harvest our rainwater for use in the showers, basins, toilets and washing of linen and towels.

We also use all food, garden cuttings, eggshells, napkins and fruit and vegetable off cuts and wastages in our own homemade compost.

Any tar road.

Keep on the tar roads on your way to me.  Dirt roads will cause damage to your wheels of your vehicle.  If you do choose to use them make sure you have 2 spare wheels in your vehicle.

When I send you on roads to view flowers, they are save, do not fear.  But routes further than 80km from me cut my guests wheels due to sharp rocks in the road.

The dirt roads may also look shorter, but they take longer to drive than the tar route

We are very open and flexible to move your booking to another date if we have availability.  We do however accommodate guests that got their flights cancelled due to factors outside of their ability to control.

Yes, the minimum age requirement to check-in is 18 years old. We do not take children under 18.  But babies that is not crawling/walking is very welcome.

No we dont, we run fully on Solar power, but that said, if there is too many rainy/cloudy days we are then forced to rely on our national power supplier which are sometimes not to dependable but we do cope as we try to then use our internal power supply only as a backup.

We also harvest rain water which is then repurposed for washing and toilets.

Our graywater is used for gardening.

Yes, we have made additional power points available for that.   There maybe additional charge for this service depending on the nature and load that you are planning to use..

Check in from 2pm but no later that 10pm

Check out strictly at or before 10am, if later there maybe additional charge

Very safe parking behind locked gate

We utilize our fridges/freezers completely to the brim....  especially over August/Sept/October.  There is no space for a mouse in it. Please use your bar fridge for this purpose.

In Afrikaans, we sometimes use words that may have a lot of meanings.  The word "DOP" in Afrikaans means the following:  Protection/Cover/Holding something inside/Watching/Liquor (any form be it beer/wine/brandy/whiskey or the top cover/screw on for a bottle/container.

For a 5 star Guest house I would think it means Protection.  What do you think?

Yes we do.  Normally the following day service or same day if we get it by 8am

No!  We are a top 5 star guest house. We will supply and more for your convenance.

Vanrhyns Pass

This beautiful tarred pass forms part of the R27 between Vanrhynsdorp and Nieuwoudtville and was originally built and designed by Thomas Bain.  It is just under 9 km in length and climbs 595m to summit at 825m ASL,  producing an average gradient of 1:15 with the steepest sections being at l:12. This is a well engineered pass with a good safety record providing you stick to the speed limits. This is amongst the top 10 passes of the Northern Cape and is a must drive offering grand views, tight chicane style corners and lots of variety. The pass is named after Petrus Benjamin Van Rhyn - a clergyman, politician and member of parliament in the old mission settlement of Troe-Troe. The town's name was changed in 1881 to Vanrhynsdorp.

Nieuwoudtville

Flower time in Nieuwoudtville stretch from August to October..... but we can never promise a good flower show.....  as flower will bloom how and when they want to!   But 20 Aug to 10 Sept is always a save option

Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve, Glacial Floor, Church and much more

Geocache

  • The glacial floor exposed on the farm Oorlogkloof south of Nieuwoudtville is easily reached by
following the main road through the town and driving on a reasonable dirt road for about 7 km. The
    site is about 300m wide.
About 300 million years ago, glacial conditions prevailed over Southern Africa when it migrated with
the rest of the Gondwana supercontinent over the South Pole. The ridges and striations in the
sandstone were formed as a result of ice movement during this time. The grooves were not made
on bedrock, but in a thin layer of sandy debris trapped between bedrock and the glacier base. This
veneer of glacial detritus, which was eroded from sandstone bedrock and carried along by the ice,
is preserved as a pebbly quartzose sandstone. The grooves were made by rock and pebbles held in
the ice. The bedrock consists of upper Table Mountain Group (i.e. Nardouw Formation) sandstone,
dating back to about 420 million years, whereas the glaciation occurred some 100 million years later,
well after lithification of the bedrock and partial erosion of the rocky surfaces. Glacial erosion was
followed by melting of the ice and deposition of its debris load as the diamictite blanket of the
Dwyka Formation over the eroded land surface.
  • It is clear that many of the delicate structures formed in quiet water when the ice front retreated or
was lifted clear of the sediments by buoyancy during a rise in sea-level. These beds were
eventually covered by fine suspended mud settling on them, leaving sufficient time for compaction
to take place before meltwater currents and rain-out debris from the glacier formed a blanket
    deposit over.
  • Thanks to Western Cape Branch of the Geological Society of South Africa for information.
  • Please close the gate as you go to or leave the site - Thank you.
